‘ARE YOU READY to die as a Christian?’

This was the question that Adamu Habila faced on the 28th November 2012 as gunmen from the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram broke into his Nigerian home and threatened him with death.

As Habila answered ‘yes’, his wife begged for their lives.

Moments later a gunman shot Adamu in the face. All 14 of the Nigerian’s Christian neighbours were killed in the attack.

But in what some Christians are calling a 'miracle', Habila survived as the bullet exited the base of his cheek.

Speaking in a panel discussion held in Washingdon, US this week, Habila said: “I know, if not because of God, I am a dead man now…But, because of his grace, I am still alive in order to testify the goodness of God in my life.”

Habila’s words came in the same week that the US Department of State designated Boko Haram, which means ‘Western education is forbidden’, as a foreign terrorist organisation.

Rev Ben Enwuchola, Chaplain to the Nigerian Community in UK said, ‘This is an act of heinous crime in the name of religion and we condemn it completely.

‘We rejoice for the miraculous deliverance of Habila, sadly, others were not that fortunate. But thank God they stood for their precious faith in Christ.

‘Our prayers are with the families of the victims who paid the ultimate price for their faith. Whatever happens light will triumph over darkness.’

Allen Moxham, communications director for Open Doors UK said:  ‘In Nigeria and many other places around the world, Christians face huge challenges to simply survive. Christianity is under threat.

‘However the irony is, that it is people like Adamu and his witness, that will help the world see a better day. But without the prayers and support of the worldwide family of believers, he cannot continue.’
