Paving the Way for Mubarak's Visit to the United States in April

We know that Mubarak is preparing to visit the United States in April to meet with its new President Obama. This visit is very important to the ageing Mubarak, who is desperate to keep up his image as self-acclaimed regional stabilizer, leader of the Arab world and main player in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. A role which also secures him nearly 2 billion dollars of in US aid plus handouts yearly.

The second division was lost by a single vote: the slenderest of majorities, but sufficient, it now turns out, to save Channel 4 from a prosecution for incitement to religious hatred.

A public debate has been underway in Egypt over the regime's treatment of the country's Christians. This debate emerged following lawsuits by Christians who had converted to Islam and then reconverted to Christianity, and who were now demanding that the Egyptian Interior Ministry issue them new official documents in their original names and with "Christian" in the "religion" entry field.
