ISTANBUL, January 31 (Compass Direct News) – In a blow to religious freedom in Egypt, a Cairo court has ruled against a Muslim convert to Christianity who requested that his religious affiliation be changed.

ISTANBUL, January 25 (Compass Direct News) – An Egyptian judge is scheduled to rule next week on the case of a Muslim-born convert to Christianity whose court hearing threatened to turn into a brawl earlier this month, the convert’s lawyer said.

Next Tuesday (January 29) Judge Muhammad Husseini is expected to decide whether to allow former Muslim Mohammed Ahmed Hegazy to drop his case to change his religious affiliation in order to correct certain legal mistakes, lawyer Gamal Eid said.

Afghan Student Sentenced to Death for Downloading Paper Against Islam

KABUL, Afghanistan —  An Afghan court on Tuesday sentenced a 23-year-old journalism student to death for distributing a paper he printed off the Internet that three judges said violated the tenets of Islam, an official said.

The three-judge panel sentenced Sayad Parwez Kambaksh to death for distributing a paper that humiliated Islam, said Fazel Wahab, the chief judge in the northern province of Balkh, where the trial took place. Wahab did not preside over the trial.

A Cairo court on Tuesday postponed till Jan. 29 the final verdict on the case of Mohamed Hegazy, a Muslim who converted to Christianity.
Hegazy’s lawyer had requested a freeze on the case to complete legal procedures, but while the public attorney had agreed to the request, the 20 lawyers spearheading an apostasy case against Hegazy had refused the request, leading the court to adjourn the hearing till Jan. 29.

Islamabad, January 17:: A radical Islamic group in Pakistan’s Khyber Agency bordering Afghanistan has warned that any man shaving his beard will have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000.

 

Haji Namdar, the chief of the Tanzim Bilmaroof (group for promotion of virtue), announced a ban on shaving in a broadcast made on Wednesday from his illegal FM radio station.
